Moving with kids: 5 tips on making it a great experience!

Of course, a move can already be difficult for you and your partner, however, it is a difficult process for your child(ren) too. A move could be like an emotional rollercoaster for children; saying goodbye to their old home, their old friends, neigbourhood and not knowing what will await them in this new home... It could be a very unpleasant experience for a child. So, keeping the mood positive and getting your child(ren) excited for the move, are very important to-do's! Therefore, we put together 5 handy tips that will help you and your child(ren) to a happy and exciting move!

#1. Moving with kids: Watch movies and read books about moving

Every parent would rather see their children playing, then see them sitting behind a screen all day of course. However, every parent also know that children love to sit behind a screen sometimes... In this case, use this time to make them excited for your move by letting them watch videos about moving (made for children of course). You can find a lot of these videos on YouTube and they really intend to portray moving as a fun and exciting event! Next to this, you could read  your kids children books about moving, which serves the same purpose; making your children familiar with the idea of moving and the fun parts of it!

#2. Moving with kids: Plan a goodbye party!

It's not a weird idea to think that your child will have some issues with the upcoming move. A new school, sportclub, having to say goodbye to all friends and try to make new ones again... These are not pleasant experiences for a child of course. When throwing a goodbye-part you will give your child(ren) the opportunity to say goodbye the best way possible and prepare them for a new adventure. However, do not forget: give your child space to be sad and give them opportunity to talk about their fears. For teenagers a goodbye-party is great idea too, as around this age parties start to become very important of course. This way, your children willl have fun and a nice memory to hold on to!

#3. Moving with kids: Let your children help decide on their new rooms

As a child you're used to having your parents make all kinds of decisions for you. But how cool and empowering would it be to actually help making decisions! Therefore, our third tip is to involve your child in the decision making during the move. Let your child decide which colour their new room will be, or think about how they would like to furninsh their new room. This way, your child cannot wait to sleep in their own new decorated room for the first time! Especially for teenagers it's important to involve them in the decision making of your move very early already. This will give them a feeling that they are a part of the move too and that the new house will also be their new home.

#4. Moving with kids: Pack and unpack moving boxes together

Another way to involve your child(ren) in the move, is to let them pack their moving boxes. You even have special "children movingboxes"! This way,  they can put all their toys and things in their own boxes and even colour their boxes. This way they recognise the boxes with their own stuff and know where their things are right away, which excites them to unpack!

#5. Moving with kids: Make moving an adventure!

When you have finally moved to your new place, you will have an entirely empty house! So; putting up a tent in your living room, playing hide, etc... are fun and exciting things you can do to make your new house even more adventurous! Also, eating things you wouldn't normally eat and letting your children do things they normally are not alway allowed to do (to a certain extent of course), will make your move an incredibely nice adventure for both you and your children! After all; moving is of course the start of a whole new adventure already...
