Frequently-asked questions on registering your move at your municipality

If you are going to move, there are a few authorities that need to know about this, which includes your new municipality. To assure that your registering procedure goes according to plan, ScanMovers has made a list of frequently-asked-questions about registering your move at your new municipality.

1. "How do I register my move at the municipality?"

Registering a move often is quite a simple process. Are you moving within your municipality or to a new municipality, chances are high that you can register your move online on the website of the municipality. You can do this by going to your (new) municipality's website and log in with your DigiD account. The municipality will then adjust your move in the BRP (Basis Registratie Personen - english: Dutch Basic Registratration of People)).

Registering online is not always possible with every municipality in the Netherlands. In the case it isn't possible you need to make an appointment, drop by the municipality at the city hall and personally register your move. Next to this, you can often send your registration via post too (check the municipality's website for documents). Are thing still not very clear yet, please do check the municipality's website as all detailed information can be found there.

2. "When can I register my move at the municipality?"

The time period for registering your move at your new municipality, is often between 4 weeks before until 5 days after your moving date. If you register after this time period, the actual day you register your move will be the date registered as your official moving date. We advise you to register your move as quickly as possible as you will risk a fine of at least € 325,- if you're too late! Of course we don't want that, as moving itself already isn't that cheap either...

3. "Who is allowed to register my move at the municipality?"

If you want to be sure your registration happens the right way, you should do it yourself. However, who else is allowed to register your move for you? According to Rijksoverheid.nl the following people can register your move:

  • Every adult for themself;
  • Every minor of age 16 or 17 for themself;
  • Cohabitating spouses/registered partners for each other;
  • The parent, guardian or caretaker for underaged children;
  • Parents for resident underaged children;
  • Adult children for their resident parents;
  • The curator for a person who is placed under his/her guardianship;
  • An authorized representative.

4. "Which documents do I need to register my move at the municipality?"

It doesn't matter if you register your move personally, via post or digitally, the municipality will always require a few documents. The two standard documents needed, are:

1. A valid proof of identification, such as a passport, drivers license, Dutch identitycard, etc...;

2. A proof of residence, such as a lease contract, a purchase deed, or a decleration of consent by a main tenant.
